As a 2026 9/11 Day and AmeriCorps grantee, Student Leadership, Involvement and Community Engagement (SLICE) at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln is proud to be part of a nationwide movement inspiring millions of Americans to commemorate the 25th anniversary of September 11 through acts of service and remembrance.
Throughout September, Huskers are invited to participate in meaningful events, including the Memorial Stadium Stair Climb, Flag Remembrance display, hygiene kit assembly project, educational activities, and volunteer opportunities that support our community.
Together, we honor those who lost their lives, recognize the courage and sacrifice of first responders, and carry forward the spirit of unity and service inspired by 9/11 by serving others and strengthening our communities.
Remembrance Events
September 10
Popcorn Pop-Up for 9/11 Day
3 to 4 p.m. | Nebraska Union, The Crib
Students will write thank-you cards expressing their appreciation to first responders for their service.
They will also have the opportunity to explore a nonprofit volunteer fair, where they can learn about local organizations and discover ways to get involved in serving their community.

Stair Climb for 9/11 Day
5:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. | Memorial Stadium
Honor the 25th Anniversary of September 11, 2001 by participating in an early-morning climb that equals the 110 stories of the World Trade Center towers.
A symbolic tribute to the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of the victims, survivors, first responders, service members, and all those impacted by the events of 9/11.

Remembrance Flag Placing for 9/11 Day
7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. | Nebraska Union Plaza
Students and staff will place flags and informational signs around the Nebraska Union Plaza and East Union Plaza to honor the lives lost on September 11.
Throughout the day, students can view the display, learn about the events of 9/11, and reflect on the courage, sacrifice, and resilience shown during and after the tragedy.

Hygiene Kit Assembly Project for 9/11 Day
2 to 4 p.m. | Two locations
Help assemble 700+ hygiene kits for individuals and families experiencing hardship in our community.
Join on September 16 in the Nebraska East Union's Prairie Suite.
On September 17 gather in the Nebraska Union's Chimney Rock Room.
September 21–25
Engage Lincoln for 9/11 Day
Various times and locations
Join fellow Huskers in volunteering with local nonprofit organizations that address community needs.
Opportunities include conservation work, sorting clothing donations, distributing food and meals, serving at food banks, supporting the zoo, and assisting other community organizations while making a positive impact through service.

Project Connect Lincoln
9 a.m. to 3 p.m. | Pinnacle Bank Arena
Project Connect Lincoln is a one day, one stop event for essential services and support for anyone experiencing homelessness or at-risk of homelessness.
Volunteers will work directly with event guests to assess their specific needs and guide them to the various service and information providers’ booths.

To bridge the generation gap, 9/11 Day has launched a comprehensive youth engagement and education initiative for the 25th anniversary of 9/11. 9/11 Day is offering an expanded library of free lesson plans, teachers' guides, and other classroom resources
