Expectations vary based on the RSO and advisor, evolving year to year. Advisors and student leaders should regularly connect and define their goals. At a minimum, advisors should:

  • Be available for advising and required document approvals.
  • Support leadership transitions and provide historical continuity.
  • Ensure newly elected officers are registered on NvolveU and attend Annual Orientation and SOFS Treasurer Training.
  • Help review and update the RSO constitution every few years.
  • Allow student leaders to make key decisions within established guidelines.
  • Meet with officers and members as needed.
  • Assist in setting goals and planning events.
  • Empower members to develop leadership skills and advance the organization’s mission.

Advisors and students should set mutual expectations. For a helpful list of discussion points to have with your officers check out the RSO Advisor Resource Library.
