- Use Resources & Learn from History – Ask about past practices, use available resources, and connect with previous RSO Advisors for insights. You don’t have to know everything.
- Set Clear Expectations – Define your role, what you expect from the executive board and members, and what they expect from you. Let students lead while offering guidance.
- Be Patient & Support Growth – There’s a learning curve, but student growth is worth it. Listen, observe, and provide support rather than controlling details. Offer plenty of positive feedback.
- Build Relationships for Accountability – Establish trust with leaders so they seek your input. Ask guiding questions to help them develop leadership skills.
- Encourage Experimentation & Embrace Failure – Not every event will succeed, but effort builds engagement. Allow safe failures to help students learn.
- Leverage Training & Peer Advisors – Utilize SLICE training, RSO Advisors, and officers from similar organizations for support.
- Review SLICE & SOFS Resources – Familiarize yourself with policies and resources to better support students.
- Advising an RSO is Like Herding Cats—But Worth It!
