Produced by OmniArts nebraska, Understanding: K&Q –standing with each other is to be a highly collaborative, original performance piece, created to illuminate issues faced by “Kids” and “Queers.” By employing the talents of local artists in fields to range from dance/choreography, music/composition, audio/visual art, and storytelling/acting, OmniArts nebraska will create 1-2 community-building and creative workshops open to all people affiliated with, and served by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln LGBTQA Resource Center. In these workshops, participants will be led through a visualization exercise, and they will create a mandala in response to it. The artistic material generated by the participants will then be extracted and woven into a fictionalized stage play, which will entertain and enlighten our community, while reaching out and offering direct support to these vital organizations through the inherently beneficial nature of the arts.
Understanding: K&Q will be a multimedia performance piece generated by collecting stories and memories directly from the source, the very subject of the piece of art will be the ultimate progenitor for all of the information therein. Each of the parts complete, as well as a part of a greater whole. Understanding: K&Q-- standing with each other, seeks to take real stories, and/or fictionalized stories of everyday people, edit, augment and transform them into a cohesive whole which leads the audience to a cathartic, uplifting experience where they are able to meet “ordinary people”, faced with extraordinary circumstances, prevail, and to recognize a bit of themselves in a surprising way.
There will be two workshops, one on Aug. 11 and one on Aug. 25, 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., to develop the performance pieces for the Understanding Q part. The workshops will be held in Student Involvement’s Green room. For those LGBTQA indidivuals interested in participating in the workshops, please email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 402.472.1652
