What is academic service-learning?

Academic service-learning is a pedagogy designed to integrate service in the community with academic study to advance understanding of course content and help strengthen the community. Through strong reflective components, academic service-learning aids student development by helping students consider relationships between their service, the curriculum of the class, and its impact on their personal values and professional goals. Similarly, the University community and community partners share a reciprocal relationship during the process. Furthermore, academic service-learning can help faculty achieve the three essential parts of the University's mission by providing opportunities to combine teaching and research with community issues and needs. Grants are available through Student Involvement to aid faculty in the implementation of academic service-learning in the classroom.
