Events: Alternative Service Breaks

When: January 2 to 9, 2010
Where: San Antonio, TX
Cost: $350
Why: Did you know San Antonio has one of the lowest literacy rates in the nation? San Antonio has one of the highest percentages of substandard housing for any major U.S. city.
How: Taking a Bus to San Antonio, splitting into teams to work with different issues.
Issues/Organizations:
Social Justice: The San Antonio AIDS Foundation promotes education and awareness of HIV/AIDS issues. The facility houses 22 to 25 persons with HIV/AIDS, but the foundation also works with over 650 outside clients. Check out their possible volunteer opportunities.
Violence: Family Violence Prevention Services offers counseling and support, as well as transitional housing in a shelter with over 100 beds. Volunteers will help with projects around the shelter, including kids programs, and at the distribution center.
Urban Poverty: Blueprint Ministry participates in urban housing restoration for elderly, disabled, and low income individuals and families. Volunteers will paint, remodel, and help with other construction projects as appropriate for the skill level of the participants. UNL will not be participating in the faith aspects of this non-profit organization.
